I loved this quotation, though I confess to adding an extra layer to it – “AS IF.” (See below)
We all get stuck in a “what if?” or “should have” cycle from time to time…neither of which is productive or helpful. Our internal dialogue matters, and the thought process of the former two statements resides in a fundamental lack (which I guarantee you, don’t actually have!)
When we can move towards the “even if,” we allow room for growth, and the acknowledgement that we are enough. We begin to actually SEE the possibilities unfold…
When, however, we let go of fear and move towards “AS IF,” then the magic really kicks in! (Read “AS IF – The Key To Magic And Manifesting (Yes, Really!))
I was taught this lesson many, many moons ago…but I failed to actually learn it until much later. I suppose, though, it doesn’t really matter how long it takes to learn…just that we are willing to do so, and that we move in that direction consistently.
Any day can be the day we break a cycle or release what no longer serves us – but it is ultimately up to us. This is a powerful bit of wisdom that takes not only a willingness to learn it, but immense courage to take those steps. When we trust ourselves, and that life always finds a way to work out for the better, we can more easily take the leap. It is one that – in the end – is well worth the bravery.
Know your value, recognize your contribution, raise your head high, and claim the life you deserve. We are not bound to any limitations but those our minds contrive.
This has always been one of my goals in life – honestly, since I can remember. I can’t say that I’ve always done the best job, and I know that I fall short at times… But there is nothing that gives me greater joy than contributing positively to someone’s life. My father calls me the “cheerer-upper,” which I desperately hoped I lived up to through the years (and I continue to strive for it!) But even more than that, I take such “designations” to heart – when someone says I inspire them to do something good for themselves, it’s like my heart wants to burst out of my chest.
It is a pursuit that will last all my years, and one that teaches me as I go… But I’ll never lose sight of it because I know what it’s like to be in the darkness with nary a spark to light the way. I know what it’s like to face our deepest fears alone, and I don’t wish that for anybody.
You are so much stronger than you think.
When you are in the throes of despair, frustration, anger. . .take a moment to b r e a t h e.
Take a moment – at the hardest time at which TO a breath. Feel…allow…the in…and the out.
Remind yourself within that space that you have accomplished so much more than you are giving yourself credit for. You have surmounted obstacles at one time that seemed impossible. You are in charge.
Remember you are a survivor and a fighter and that you will get through it just like you have so many times before.
Courage isn’t always that stoic, fearless lion’s face people post all the time. It isn’t necessarily stronger than the storm, like quotations always say…
Courage isn’t necessarily so earth-shattering that anyone else even sees it but you. . .
Often, it is that gentle whisper in your ear. . .that feeling within you that says, “I have tomorrow to try again.”
Don’t give up, or allow discouragement to take hold – small steps are still progress. One day at a time is more that good enough.
Fake it until you make it, as they say. . .
You may not be ready – literally, or in your own mind – to give that monstrous presentation to the CEO.
You may not be ready – literally or. . .in your own mind! – to compete in the next category up in your sport.
You may not be ready to take the next step, whatever it may be. . .
Or, frankly, to face yourself head on, once and for all. . .
But. . .
You can pretend to be brave enough to get by.
Most things in life move fast – ever notice how you say “oh my god, is it APRIL already?! How did the year get here so quickly!?!” It isn’t going to slow down anytime soon. If you worry about not being ready, opportunities will (not maybe) pass you by.
It’s a lot like putting on a “happy face” even when you don’t feel like it – that physiologic action pulls a mind-over-matter type about-face by relaying to your brain that things aren’t so bad after all. The act of smiling in and of itself creates a chain reaction (thank you neural messaging!) that helps lift your mood – when things are severe, any uplift can make a huge difference.
Pretending to be brave may not have the same scientific explanation exactly, but it can bring about a wave of confidence you didn’t know you had. If, in the moment, you are still struggling, remind yourself that being thrown to the wolves, and being UNprepared WILL teach you. A LOT. You will learn from the experience – what to not to do, what to do better, and most importantly, what you did that really worked. Down the road you won’t have to put on the “I’m a shark” face (or…er…fin!) because you will have already proven to yourself you have the wherewithal to kick ass.
