Weekend Meals

Weekends are my wind-down time – I do have two activities on Saturday (Ninjutsu Combat Simulation, and Aerial Yoga), but they aren’t as rigorous as my weekly workout routines (Brazilian JiuJitsu four times a week, cardio three times a week, lifting at least four times a week, Ninjutsu classes four times a week…, and some teaching with Martial Arts kids classes.)  I’m incredibly thankful I can schedule so many activities, as I’m energetic by nature and need to move around.

But for me, Saturday afternoon and Sunday I can give myself a little bit of a break physically, and sometimes as far as eating out.  During the week we usually eat at home, and my meals don’t vary hugely in terms of content… On the weekend, I’m still really clean, but I might have more yolks than I typically do in the mornings, or I might have more servings of fruit, or almonds.  None of it is unhealthy, but I’m less concerned with portions and timing – I sort of just have the clean foods I like with less stringency.

I’m asked a lot whether or not I have “cheat meals” – I don’t really.  But again, the weekends, or when I travel, I loosen the reigns a bit, going with whatever the flow might be.  That’s enough “cheat” for me – I stick to healthy options, so I never get totally out of hand, or go so overboard that I’m beating myself up.  Just what works for me personally!

This weekend we went to brunch and my fiancé – who’s always looking out for me! – ordered the eggs that came with HIS meal exactly the way I ordered my three.  😀  Normally I have a whole egg and egg whites in the morning, with a ton of vegetables – but when I’m out, I’m eating three whole eggs in a sitting…and in this case, a few more!  It isn’t something I do every day, so I’m not overly worried about having a few – I could definitely use the aminos, and the healthy fat…plus…PROTEIN! ❤ I always order fruit salad too, for some sweetness…AND extra vitamins!

We had dinner at home – my favorite ground chicken recipe, and tons of roasted broccoli (he’s always makes it perfectly.) Filling, wonderful nutrients and solid macros…good stuff!

What’s your weekend plan?

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid

Correctors are one of THE most amazing products in the world of color cosmetics.  For moons, it was incredibly hard to track this kind of thing down – as a Ballroom dancer, spray tans were a prerequisite and matching one’s skin tone with any manner of product was a (*cough* pain in the rump!) challenge.

Performance aside, being able to easily conceal things like excessive redness, sallowness, undereye circles from that late night college paper was SO much easier with the proper product...  But having to go to Halloween stores or places like Ricky’s NYC for stage makeup wasn’t always easy to do!  The products were out there, but often relegated to specific industries such as film and theater.

These days, color correcting palettes and concealers are a CINCH to find.  What I love is that companies are adding color correctors to their already existing, successful concealer lineups, as well as offering palettes, the latter of which is a DREAM to own when you are competing (all the colors right there in one, handy case! 🙂 )

Urban Decay is now offering five shades – the five most popular – for covering the most common perfect-complexion-hinderers, with their Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid:

  1. Green – reduces redness.
  2. Lavender – balances sallowness (think, too yellow. Very popular in Asian markets.)
  3. Pink – brightens dark areas.
  4. Yellow – corrects dullness (also helps with redness and darkness.)
  5. Peach – masks circles/spots.

The product “features an innovative, lightweight formula that instantly color-corrects and blurs flaws, leaving skin illuminated and bright. Subtle pearlescent pigments diffuse light to perfect skin, while antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E condition and protect.” It is formulated without Paragons, Sulfates, or Phthalates, and is incredibly easy to use and blend.

YSL also has a few versions of its cult Touch éclat out in corrective hues, which you may have seen already…  And they aren’t alone – there are rather a slew of correctors emerging, both at the mass market and high-end levels, some of which I will speak to soon!

Hourglass No. 28 Lip Oil Limited Tint

Hourglass No. 28 Lip Oil gathered an incredibly following…rapidly…for living up to its claims as a high-powered conditioner made with “essential oils, vitamins and three powerful active ingredients.”  Now I am not 100% sure about the anti-aging part of the pitch, but protecting from the environment helps in that area by default.

The product has thus far only been offered in a clear version but there is now a pinky-red shade being offered as a limited edition – “Icon” is Hourglass’s signature shade, imparting the lips with “a flush of healthy color.”

The tinted version can be purchased at Sephora or Nordstrom. 🙂

e.l.f. Essential Kiss

e.l.f. just came out with a new balm in four happy tints (which are, be forewarned, apparently in limited supply.  This reminds me a little bit of the Ambient Palette conundrum… You?)

  • Bare Kiss
  • Flirty & Perky Pink
  • XO Red
  • Berry Sweet

The e.l.f. Essential Lip Kiss Balm is infused with Vitamins A, E, Grape Seed Oil, & Jojoba Oil to help nourish and moisturize lips,” and has a mint flavor.

I’m not sure how these compare to the Maybelline Baby Lips, as yet…a product I ADORE.  I’m curious to see if they are more pigmented…and then there’s the thing about being mint flavored.  I always like cherry or berry of some kind.

For $2.00, though, you could literally buy all 4 and test them out for fun!

Weekend Lunch

Right before moving, my hunnie and I had a chance to get together with all the parents (always a treat – they are all amazing! ❤ ) We went out to dinner together, which was a ball, but he and I had a chance to get some lunch together earlier.  It was a gorgeous day…still quite warm, but Fall was undoubtedly present, trailing on the end-of-summer breeze.

We sat outside and ordered some unsweetened iced tea – I’ve recently decided I am steering clear of Splenda (sucralose) and the like, as I *may* have intolerance.  (PS, that’s rather a topic all its own.  Alarming, some of what I was reading!)

I feel like whatever I order is simple – fortunately this waitress agreed!  Most of the time I can order healthily and people are accommodating – it is SO much more commonplace these days to be asked to “modify” a meal, whether because people are more health conscious, have allergies etc…  But in the end, a simple meal without the extra butter, oil or paraphernalia IS easy to prepare.  So modify away!

I asked for “a usual” for me, baby spinach, tomatoes and grilled chicken.  That’s it.  Nothing else!  It sounds sp plain but when you add salt and pepper and chip it up a bit, the moisture from the baby spinach helps it all mix in.  It’s delicious, and incredibly good for you.  It’s also filling because of the protein, so I’m not starving in two seconds.

I’m looking at it now, somewhat hungrily, actually!  I used to eat a lot of lettuce, but baby spinach, or really deep greens, pack so much more of a nutritional punch that it’s worth at least mixing some in if you don’t want to go ALL in.

Spring / Summer Sweet Tooth

I’m not going to say I don’t have chocolate cravings…or that I wouldn’t *want* to devour a lava cake just because…but I know that my body not only doesn’t respond well to sugars, but that eating like that would absolutely show.  My personal goals are more important to me than having something I know I will feel disappointed about later, especially because I work incredibly hard.

It’s important to say…staying fit is not only about the “looks” – there is so much more to spending time at a gym, and watching what we eat.  Indulging in some foods will actually make me physically unwell, and that’s a great a reason as any!  Sugars, processed carbohydrates and heavy (trans and saturated) fats can render me anything from lethargic, to puffy, to cramped.  No good!  Every person is different, though, so I steer clear of proselytizing (which drives me bonkers!)  My triathlete friends and I eat very differently because our needs, bodies, and goals vary – we are all right.  The way that I eat actually does make me very happy – I love the foods, and I don’t skimp!

Since I do LOVE chocolate, I keep individually wrapped sugar-free dark chocolates in my cabinet.  I will just have one if I want to satisfy a craving.  But often I’d rather have something that I know is good for me, and simultaneously squash the craving from the get go.  I realize that not everyone believes this idea works, but it is worth a try if you are struggling with eating too many desserts.  Not only do fruits provide that sweet taste, but often the water and fiber content helps you to feel full…keeping you from over indulging!

I was at my parents’ last night and had a total sweet tooth – not sure what prompted it, but let’s just say I made a bee line to the GINORMOUS bowl of red grapes!

I prefer red to green, primarily for taste reasons…but it’s nice to note the added benefits of having these little (technically more-purple-hued) guys.  Red grapes contain vitamin c, vitamin k (as well as other trace vitamins), a good amount of potassium, as well as the pholyphenol antioxidant resveratrol.  Resveratrol is touted for various benefits, including its anti-inflammatory and antiestrogenic effects, as well as potentially playing a role in both  the prevention of heart disease and cancer (I won’t delve into specifics, as I am neither a doctor nor a scientist, but it is fair to say red grapes are a much better choice than processed desserts!)

I also like to keep pineapple in my fridge, whether already cut or one that I’ve chopped myself – YUM!  I’ve been known to sprinkle cinnamon on mine, which probably sounds quirky…but it’s delicious.  Pineapple is also high in vitamin C, A, B1 (Thiamine) and beta-carotine, as well as manganese and phosphorous.  The key enzyme in pineapple, bromelain, is its own powerhouse, contributing to better digestion, lower inflammation (including post-operative), and reduced hypertension.

So you can basically have your cake and eat it too with these fruits, and many others…figuratively speaking, of course! 🙂  If you are battling a sweet tooth, and concerned about maintaining goals – whether regarding how you FEEL, or your waistline – it’s worth asking for a bowl of fresh fruit or berries.

You may be pleasantly surprised – you can be just as satisfied, and forgo the personal guilt trip!  Isn’t THAT a nice break! 😉

Healthy and Happy Weekends With My Hunnie

One of the most important things in Life is to be around people who support you in your goals and endeavors.  Those who not only allow you to BE who you are…but who love you JUST the way you are.  No judgement, no pressure, just comfort. ❤

As spoken to in other posts, it’s fair to say I am incredibly particular about my nutrition – in part, I physically feel better when I eat a certain way.  And, in part, it is important to me to stay at a certain level of fitness – I’m not just speaking outwardly here, but also in the sense that I want to have the proper fuel to achieve the endurance and strength I am looking for, as well as the sustenance needed to support my gains.  As we get older, hard work is rarely enough – without the necessary nutrients and macros, the challenges are tougher to surmount.

Having been through two severe eating disorders, PTSD and CPTSD, it was a concern of mine that anyone I’d want to be with would think I was “odd” with my eating habits.  Oftentimes a person who suffers such illnesses grapples with shame, pain, and a whole lot of (unwarranted…but excruciatingly real, and highly debilitating)  embarrassment surrounding discussion of our “eating habits.”  And when I say that, I mean to the point of leaving us captive at home, terrified to leave…and petrified of getting to know anyone new.

I’ve had plenty of people make jabs and comments, but over the years I’ve thankfully come to realize that:

  1. I’m really NOT that odd.  At ALL.  (Real lightbulb moment!)
  2. Some of the people who do make jabs often are unhappy with their own dietary habits, and / or aren’t thrilled about where their own health stands.
  3. Not everyone “gets” or appreciates my personal goals…and that is totally okay!
  4. There are a LOT more supportive people out there who say “oh WOW, I wish I ate like that!” as opposed to the smaller group saying “do you even eat ‘real’ food?”
  5. Being in a relationship with someone who supports you makes EVERYTHING better.  The anxieties that once plagued my Life melted away. Literally.  Just. Like. THAT.  Being able to breathe again is an incredible feeling – so much more freeing than I can express.

My hunnie and I will go out to dinner, or brunch, or breakfast…and there’s never stress about what I’m ordering, or if I sound strange or picky… He just smiles because I am so happy with the healthy foods that I ask for.  It doesn’t even matter if I ask for the same things all the time, he’s just happy that I AM happy, and that means so much.  If you have ever been through eating disorders, or ANY disorder for that matter, you will understand the gravity of these words.  It IS a big deal.

This weekend he took me to a beautiful restaurant in a quiet, charming town – we sat outside in the early even sun, surrounded by singing birds and the scent of flowers and green. Divine. The menu reminded me of Yin and Yang, and how fitting it was, as the duality of Life ever amazes me – whether the contrast of having been in the depths of despair and fear with anorexia and exercise bulimia, to rediscovering the feeling freedom and breath years later.  Or the idea that it is possible to find a piece that fits so perfectly with one’s own…so much so that Life becomes brighter, and dreams manifest of their own volition, without solicitation.  I once had someone sew seeds of disillusionment and self doubt, saying that “no one will ever love” my quirks the same way, or be as supportive of them.  How refreshing it is to prove that wrong.  How refreshing to find more comfort with one person than I ever knew existed…or thought possible.

As for what I had… I don’t like to drink my calories (no, I don’t count – fortunately I dropped that habit a while back!) – eating is physically more satisfying to me than drinking so I’d rather enjoy a delicious food for than imbibe them.  It was therefore my usual water with lemon, which I find super refreshing, great for digestion…and never in competition with the flavors of my meal.  There are, of course, a slew of other benefits, including balancing the body’s ph (which can reduce inflammation), providing a nice source of citric acid, potassium, magnesium and phosphorous...and flushing the system.

I had a beet salad with goat cheese, which was incredible – beets are often touted as a great recovery food, not only because they are chock full of vitamins (A, B, C), as well as antioxidants (beta-carotene, beta-cyanine), fiber, iron, folic acid, potassium and magnesium to name a few…  But, they are also high in inorganic nitrates, which is converted to nitric oxide in the body, after leaving the mouth.  The purported effects of a beet juice supplement include better endurance, better “bang for the buck” as far as the output needed to sustain a certain level of training, increased blood flow to the muscles…and lower blood pressure.  I’m not a nutritionist, nor a scientist so I will leave fleshing out of the discussion to them – I wasn’t ingesting a massive amount, but the point IS…I was happy to order a selection of beets knowing that it was leg day (the natural sugars would help, no matter the quantity), and it was also a healthy option. 😀  The dish was rapidly devoured.

I also requested seared salmon (as was the preparation there) with no added oil or butter – salmon of course boasts plenty of “good fats” (fish is one of my primary dietary sources of fat) so it isn’t necessary to douse it in anything else.  Beyond that, I find it doesn’t need it – the fish’s flavor is so mild that other added fats would compete – salt is enough!  There is much larger conversation to be had about farmed versus wild, which I will not address here – again, better to hash out with pros. With it, I asked for steamed vegetables (I got more beets – yay!), also without any added butter or oil.  They were PERFECT!  Salt and pepper was all I needed to bring out the natural flavors.

I was a HUGELY happy camper!  I always want to eat MORE steamed veggies, which I make at home and eat OFTEN…but this held me over for a while, which was great.

The following day, we went to lunch at a super delicious, local Italian restaurant – naturally, I ordered in my typical specific fashion.  That said, my orders are NEVER complicated – grilled chicken, no oil, no butter…plus… steamed vegetables, no oil, no butter.  That’s it! 😀  It came out PERFECTLY! ❤

While ordering out is nothing to the average person, it IS a big deal to those of us who either live a fit Life, and / or have been through various “food issues.”  It can be the difference between living Life AT ALL…and being cooped up, frightened and alone. Having a supportive other half, friends and family is vastly more important than I’d be able to express – it is always valued and appreciated, and never goes without inner acknowledgment.

To be able to enjoy a dinner out is something that, for a long time, I never dreamed was possible.  So for me…salmon and steamed green beans is worth celebrating over – every single time I have it!

Talk about feeling blessed.

Being able to breathe and feel comfortable are luxuries that this girl will NEVER take for granted.

X ❤
