Word Of The Day – Éclat (YSL, Is That You?!)

I smiled when I read the word of the day because the first thing that came to mind was YSL.

The Company’s Touche Éclat launched in 1992 – I was still in middle school so it was just off my radar.  When I got to college a few years later, however, Sephora stores started cropping up near campus – the store was a whole other realm of retail because it provided a one-stop-shopping experience for all things color (cosmetics, makeup etc) and skincare without having to deal with a full on department store. Ah, the brilliance.  Having been a performing athlete most of my Life I was used to a perpetual search for glitz and glitter (one I daresay took much more effort before the likes of Sephora.)

Back then I was far more obviously-Goth, but there was something about shimmer (the dancer and figure skater in me?) that always pulled me in.  Yes, glitter and badassery – in my own Geminian mind, they worked perfectly well in tandem.  I was regularly told I looked “intimidating” and I blended so well at a Type O show that no one would have been the wiser, but yes…my closet housed an absolutely arsenal of products.

Glowing, radiant, glimmering…all worked for me at that age – I was completely unabashed and frankly got a ton of girls hooked on the glitter.  It became a trend among the class, even with the sorority girls (with whom I shared little else in common.)  The other must-have?  Products that could fake “awake.”  Yep, countless sleepless nights writing papers, finishing homework, wolfing down a third dinner…some mornings we all needed some help (my undereye bags the most!)

At 18 it seems like sleeplessness doesn’t show… Or maybe it’s that we think it “shouldn’t”?  I can’t speak for anyone else but – while not nearly as pronounced as it can be at 38 – it showed!  Enter YSL’s cult Touche Éclat. ❤  (They’ve since followed suit with a ton more shades and a variety of “Neutralizers” (as below.)

I remember some years later working in executive retail management.  My hours were horrendous, the pay was incredibly low, and the work was exhausting!  I’d get home dead tired, and wake up feeling a shade worse than that…but I recall one of the ladies on my staff saying “you always look so bright and awake!”  With a laugh (to balance my “OMG, are you serious?!” thought process) I told her it was thanks to YSL.  “Just let me believe it -you look beautiful,” she replied. Talk about a compliment (more for the product than myself!)

So it was tried and true for me as much as all the cult followers out there, I guess! They’ve expanded in to color corrective versions also, which I have to say is hugely intelligent based on the of-the-moment trends!  I haven’t used those myself, but some days I think it would be a wise purchase… My bed, the devil on one shoulder, the pen, the angel on the other?

X ❤

Beauty Fail – Circle Glitter

So…

I came across this and, funny it may be, there are people who might give it a whirl (don’t look at me, I’m not one of them!  I did, however, see photos online of several ladies sporting the…er…idea.)

Unless you plan to hit up a disco, or you happen to be an ultra famous pop star…I’m going to go ahead and say skip it!

A good eye cream and corrective concealer can make a world of difference…without the bombardment of finger-pointing or camera snapping!

Urban Decay Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid

Correctors are one of THE most amazing products in the world of color cosmetics.  For moons, it was incredibly hard to track this kind of thing down – as a Ballroom dancer, spray tans were a prerequisite and matching one’s skin tone with any manner of product was a (*cough* pain in the rump!) challenge.

Performance aside, being able to easily conceal things like excessive redness, sallowness, undereye circles from that late night college paper was SO much easier with the proper product...  But having to go to Halloween stores or places like Ricky’s NYC for stage makeup wasn’t always easy to do!  The products were out there, but often relegated to specific industries such as film and theater.

These days, color correcting palettes and concealers are a CINCH to find.  What I love is that companies are adding color correctors to their already existing, successful concealer lineups, as well as offering palettes, the latter of which is a DREAM to own when you are competing (all the colors right there in one, handy case! 🙂 )

Urban Decay is now offering five shades – the five most popular – for covering the most common perfect-complexion-hinderers, with their Naked Skin Color Correcting Fluid:

  1. Green – reduces redness.
  2. Lavender – balances sallowness (think, too yellow. Very popular in Asian markets.)
  3. Pink – brightens dark areas.
  4. Yellow – corrects dullness (also helps with redness and darkness.)
  5. Peach – masks circles/spots.

The product “features an innovative, lightweight formula that instantly color-corrects and blurs flaws, leaving skin illuminated and bright. Subtle pearlescent pigments diffuse light to perfect skin, while antioxidant-rich vitamins C and E condition and protect.” It is formulated without Paragons, Sulfates, or Phthalates, and is incredibly easy to use and blend.

YSL also has a few versions of its cult Touch éclat out in corrective hues, which you may have seen already…  And they aren’t alone – there are rather a slew of correctors emerging, both at the mass market and high-end levels, some of which I will speak to soon!

Dior Autumn / Winter 2015/16 – Cosmopolite 2-in-1

I mentioned this snazzy primer-‘n’-concealer before after seeing it backstage at the Fall runways..but here it is on the website, ready to snag!  2-in-1 Fix It Prime & Conceal will be in stores on the 27th of this month in the USA, Japan on the 31st of July, and in August for its International debut.

Multi-benefit / multi-use products have – thankfully! – become the standard these days, and we are all the better for it! 🙂  Makes Life so much easier…this product particularly, as it helps to perfect the skin, hide blemishes, tackle undereye circles, and primes the lips prior to lipstick application – NICE!

Dior’s cosmetics are always beautiful quality –  we all have our favorite brands, of course, but I haven’t personally used a single Dior beauty product that wasn’t amazing. Even if I wasn’t in love with the shade, for example, I could never complain about the quality.

Looking forward to seeing this in-store so I can see the texture(s) first hand!

Estée Lauder New Dimension

I am delighted to see that a cosmetic company has taken the sculpting trend beyond the visage! I suppose in its own way, the degrade lip is of the ilk…but it isn’t the same thing entirely.

Estée Lauder’s New Dimension – Shape + Sculpt Eye Kit features a Smoothing Base, Highlighter and Contour trio aiming to create “bigger, brighter, more defined-looking eyes.”  Yes, a contouring product to define the upper portion – equally as important – of the eye.  In fact, on their site, they even have a section FOR “contouring” under “EYE.”

Brilliant!

Undereye concealers and light-refracting pigments can help, absolutely…but I know first hand that prepping the lid can make a BIG difference in how rested a person looks.  Add to it some contouring and I am sure that awake-and-sultry gaze will be more noticeable!

I haven’t seen swatches, but am keeping my eyes peeled.  Absolutely LOVE this concept, and love how neutral these shades are (that said, I’d love to see it in a variety of tonalities so more complexions can get away with this fancy little secret.)

(It retails for $40, but if it actually works…it’s a nice, non-invasive option! 😉 )
