You Need SPF All Year Round

Sun protection is a must – all year, at all times. Frankly, I fall short of applying sometimes when I’m in short sleeves, but you better believe my face is covered. I am also getting better about neck and décolletage.

I have a few favorite brands (La Roche Posay takes the #1 and #2 spots), and I actually DO take this topic quite seriously. It isn’t just the ageless and ghostly pallor I’m after, taking care to protect our skin during sun exposure affects our health. BIG time.

But to add a little fun to the conversation… I came across this photo and couldn’t help but take to the sassy branding. Red, black, and g o t h all over – well played, marketers.

Brilliantly, wonderfully, well played…

Urban Decay Prime Time For Holiday

Newness from Urban Decay *possibly* in time for the Holiday (supposedly available from Belk.com, but I don’t see any of these listed as yet.)  Otherwise, they are launching on urbandecay.com January 1st.

It isn’t just one product, though, or one kind of product.  UD is releasing five new primers. Yes, five. (Once again, my inner ballroom-dance-competitor-self is wondering why they’ve arrived so long after I stopped competing!)

The five, which will retail for $34 each, include:

1. Optical Illusion – Designed to blur flaws, reduce fine lines, minimize pores, smooth skin
2. Bright & Tight – Aims to provide brighter, firmer skin
3. De-Slick – As with their other De-Slicks, designed to absorb and minimize shine, and to make your makeup last loner
4. Self-Adjusting– A color-correcting formulation with encapsulated pigments that adjust to your personal skin tone
5. Urban Defense – A translucent, SPF 30 sunscreen base

They do already have quite a lineup of setting sprays, as well as eyeshadow primer – all which seem to manage rave reviews – but I think these will do rather well as a natural expansion for them.  Thoughts?

Etude House Sun Blind UV Cushion

So Cushions have become a major thing in the US – maybe not quite as massive as the impact from their originating countries, but they’ve definitely taken off in the last couple of years.  The formulations cover the gamut of beauty and color cosmetics, to skincare, so you can bet at least a few of your favorite products can be found in this format.

Take UV protection for example… How adorable is this Etude House Sun Blind Cushion? It’s nod-to-nautical stripes and bright white base make the compact itself something you wouldn’t mind pulling out.  What I love is that this precious little package packs an SPF 50+ / PA +++ punch.

In case you aren’t sure of the designations (let me say first, I am not a dermatologist, but this may help at least explain the terminology!):

  • SPF refers to the protection from the sun’s UVB rays
  • The PA rating refers to the UVA protection level
  • UVA = Long wave Ultraviolet A rays. These can penetrate deeply into the dermis (our skin’s thickest layer.) UVA therefore can lead to photo aging – premature wrinkling and aging of your skin – as well as immune system suppression.  No thanks!
  • UVB = Short Wave Ultraviolet B rays. These can burn the surface of the skin (superficial), potentially contributing to conditions like skin cancer

The PA is not regulated by the FDA, and is a Japanese and Korean designation.  These days the best way to be sure you have both covered is a “broad spectrum” or “full spectrum” on the label.  Still, it does indicate that the product offers at least some UVA protection – PA +++ is the highest grade of UVA protection available, with a Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) rating of more than 8.)

In any case, the Etude House packaging makes taking care of your skin – in Summer or any other season – a cinch.  It’s incredibly easy to tote around, making for quick and easy reapplication.  With skincare, ease of use always helps makes applying the proper amount more a habit, and less of a chore. NICE.

Humor (and Tips) – It’s HOT Out

The heat is definitely rising these days in the Northern Hemisphere – While past years have run higher, it is well above what the body is accustomed to regulating on it’s own.  It is therefore vital to stay mindful when the weather turns the dial up – lack of preparation can end (quite) poorly.

I’ve sort of been feeling more lethargic, but I’m outrightly blaming it on the oppressive heat.  Still, I’ve toned down my response – I used to be more melodramatic about it…

Now I just do my best to deal.  I won’t be caught with a frown on my face anymore, but I will be equipped with a giant bottle of water…especially when I’m training or working out.

The Holy-Heat! Checklist:

  • H20 – Stay hydrated!  Everything from your core temperature, your heart, brain, and body function, to your skin will thank you.  So, SO important, and not to be overlooked.
  • Sunscreen – Wear it when you are out.  Reapply often.  I guarantee you aren’t wearing enough (neither am I! *slap on hand*)
  • Salt – This depends on the individual and personal conditions but…if you are an athlete in particular, you need to replenish your sodium and overall electrolytes.  Water matters, but be careful not to over dilute.

Being stuck indoors during summer is a drag, especially when it’s “nice” out – but if the temp does creep up to “ungodly” maybe take a shade break too. Overheating is never a good idea, especially if you can prevent it.  And…you can!

Vitamin D

I love stormy, rainy days…and I most definitely don’t deliberately sunbathe… But there’s nothing more wonderful than being outside on a beautiful day (with your sunscreen, of course! – I use Cetaphil 35 SPF every day) to catch a little Vitamin D.

Fortunately for me…a “beautiful day” includes just about all weather conditions – snow storm, pouring rain, Spring morning, Autumn afternoon…it’s all DIVINE to me.  ❤

Really the only thing better than being outside, surrounded by the sounds of Life, is sharing it with someone I love.

It doesn’t matter if we sit together quietly, whether we laugh until our stomachs hurt…  Whether we are deep in conversation, or watching other park-goers playing sports as we sip our second coffee.  That time to just BE and enjoy the blessings of health, and warming sun, is a gift.

I know a lot of people who say they are “too busy”…but I’ll tell you, those are the people who need it most.  If you don’t make time to smell the roses…or get a regular dose of mood-boosting Vitamin D…you may find yourself not only missing a lot, but feeling lethargic and downtrodden on top of it!

High-tail it outside and you may just find you have a brighter outlook. 🙂

Palmer’s Eventone Suncare

I can’t express how important sun protection is – whether you are training outdoors regularly, or someone who just has exposure on a regular basis.  It isn’t just about aging – pesky lines and spots – either!  It is about being preventative with you skincare so as to avoid dangerous conditions as much as possible.

I used to train (figure skating) on an outdoor rink all winter as a child – for YEARS.  I was also a rollerblader who would frequent the beach trails or 10-mile outdoor paths in one go.  We didn’t know as much at the time, and I’d not be surprised if I had forgone my sunscreen back then.  These days, I still need to be better about arms, neck, shoulders, ears (the generally exposed areas when it’s warmer), but I ALWAYS have at least 30 SPF on my face.  Even then, I could reapply more frequently, but I definitely do make an effort.

IT MATTERS.

I recently saw this new Sincere products from Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula at Target.  I love their regular Cocoa Butter (the scent reminds me of cookie batter!), so I was excited to see that SPF has been added to these.

I also love sprays because they are much easier to maneuver for the tough-to-reach spots like the back, back of neck, back of shoulders etc.

Whether or not you like THIS brand, or others, it’s worth checking out the sunscreen aisle – yes, ALL times of the year.  Your epidermis will thank you, as will your body down the line.

Sun “Safety Kit”

Along with my last post…I just spotted this adorable little collection!  What a perfect way to give a few sun products a whirl if you aren’t sure!

(PS, I don’t work for Sephora, nor have I ever. They also most definitely have not asked me to work with them – wouldn’t that be nice!? – so rest assured, I am only sharing because I want to! 🙂 )

Here’s what you will get…!

That’s not a steep price for so many goodies (from, by the way, some really lovely brands!) – sample sizes, granted, but knowing that skin can have its own mood swings, it IS nice to have the option of trying them out prior to shelling out money for the full size!

Sun Shade Worshiper

I get teased often, particularly in warmer months, about my apparently-un-American pallor.  As recently as yesterday, as it turns out…!

Fortunately, I’m okay with that – I always loved being fair-skinned (despite the lifetime barrage of commentary!), and I love everyone else’s natural complexions as well.  The difference allows us to stand apart, and make the world more interesting. ❤

I might have gotten “color” as a child after playing outside, from beet to browned, depending on the day – I was lathered in sunscreen but I come from the cell-less generation who spent HOURS upon HOURS making forts, hurling snowballs, hiding in the woods, playing outdoor sports…  So some color was almost inevitable…but I was never unprepared.

Deliberately baking in the sun was, however, never, EVER something I could tolerate personally – it was, and always will be, the fast lane to a profoundly irascible, petulant, and otherwise ugly me.

I have a lot of triathlete friends, so I am used to seeing bronzed beauties all the time – but they are also wisely slathered in sunscreen, and doing an activity (one that doesn’t involve skewering themselves and rotating like a chicken on a spit.  Lovely visual, isn’t it?!)

Most people I know LOVE the heat, and love the beach – and there is nothing wrong with that!  Mother Nature is gorgeous in all forms, and it makes me happy to see people enjoying themselves.  That said, sun damage isn’t a joke…we know far too much nowadays to be negligent, especially if we have children (in which case, a day at the beach is generally premeditated!)

Carelessness is easily avoided these days – the product formulations are endless.  Sephora makes life pretty easy in this case, offering and incredibly user-friendly experience for newbies and seasoned sunscreeners alike.

You can pretty much snoop based on need, which will save a lot of folks a LOT of time.

I love that companies are making the effort to continually expand their sun care offerings, and that they are as into the technologies and of-the-moment ingredients with these products, as much as with mainstays.  In places like the Far East, pale skin is in…so you will find no shortage of sun protection, but also a surfeit of whitening products (whereas here we focus on bronzing.)  My thesis on cosmetic brands expanding into Asia – moons and moons ago – was specifically because this intrigued a spectral-skinned moi.

So if you are struggling with which one TO buy…definitely take a gander at the site (and enter SPFMINI for a sample!) you will find a whole variety of formulations to choose from to protect your and your loved ones’ beautiful skin – whatever color it is naturally, it is perfect just as it is.

I’ll be the one under the black parasol. 😉
