Illamasqua – SOPHIE Anti-Bullying Campaign

If there is one thing I don’t like to do, it’s engage in political diatribe, or proselytize my own views.  While I’m not opposed to important discussions, I have found that one or the other can often turn out heatedly, but generally not with good resolve. I try to keep my opinions about such things to myself, and simply listen when others care to share (or ignore the vehement postings if I must.)

That said, I am really big on anti-bullying, and because I work with children in Marital Arts, I like to encourage education about what seems to be more and more prevalent these days. Having been the subject of several forms of abuse from partners in my past, I can safely say it is a topic that some have a hard time speaking up about, particularly as the victim.  Bullying in and of itself is a very primal act…and one you might expect humans would have the wherewithal to override.  While dominance is oft exerted in the animal kingdom, I feel that the deliberate taunting is something human beings have added to the mix.

I like that Illamasqua – a brand that stands apart in a multitude of ways – is so outwardly supporting this cause.  I can’t say that I was outrageously divergent aesthetically, but I got to a point where I was enough so, that I got teased, talked about, harassed too… That wasn’t the “abuse” in my own life so much, but it was pretty terrible.  While I managed to sidestep most of it (mainly I was distracted by worse!) I understand what it’s like.

Illamasqua has been honoring the memory of Sophie, a young lady who was the horrifying subject of bullying gone to the extreme, since her passing in 2007.  Each November they run a campaign to spread the word, and to take proceeds and donate them to a worthy cause.

I have no affiliation with this company in any way, and in fact learned about Sophie some years ago through them.  But again, I respectfully share because it’s important that no one is alone in their suffering.

Dark Magic – More Macabre From Illamasqua

I love companies that embrace the 31st (of October, not that you needed to ask) – it isn’t that I feel validated so much as it’s more eye candy for me!

Seriously, forget the low-end stuff you can get at a pop-up Halloween store, or Party City – you don’t really want to use that stuff on  your skin (not to mention, the color payoff is often splotchy or generally inconsistent.)

If haunting happens to be a favorite activity of yours (or you gravitate towards dark and mysterious on an every day basis), celebrate with a splurge. Or a few.  You definitely won’t be disappointed!

More Halloween Fun..

Gothiness – Halloween Macabre, By Illamasqua

Leave it to Illamasqua to hold a Halloween course… I can’t say MAC wouldn’t either, but Illmasqua isn’t just edgy – a la MAC – it has a deeper, subterranean, curiously-otherworldly vibe.  Always.  To manage a full-on scare for your Fright Night revelry, they’ve got you covered…

Remarkably, the creepy harlequin-clown work (pictured) is a lot harder to achieve than one might think at first glance – try doing performance makeup even just once, and you’ll have an idea.  The deconstructed, paint-peel look reminds me of an abandoned, antiquated-Venetian mural (or maybe a mask from Carnivale that got left behind to gather dust through the centuries…) – I’d love to see the array of products used to create it, a plethora no doubt.  (PS, I can’t stand clowns, but I can appreciate the work done here!)

Anyway, you needn’t want this kind of facepaint to join in the fun – whatever form of haunt you take, sin you prefer, or wickedness you’re aiming for, I’m sure Illamasqua can help you achieve the desired eerie effects (don’t forget, your tools will matter as much.)  The course is only $67 too, which is a lot less steel than I’d have expected. For the best day of the year EVER?  Yeah, it’s worth it!

More Halloween

Illamasqua Nail Veil

Nail “polishes” are no longer strictly about color – for a long time color cosmetics have been edging towards giving “more” than just a tint.  It is not a new concept that makeup doubles as skincare…but that nail polishes double as treatment hasn’t really been around as long.  It isn’t wholly novel, necessarily, but it hasn’t been as mainstream as it is these days.

I didn’t totally expect this from Illamasqua, but as off beat as they are, I guess I shouldn’t be bowled over!  I like that they are considering the impact of their products, and that they take them to another level entirely, not only giving a beautiful look, but also something body-loving (er…nail-loving, anyway!)

The Neil Veils are “water and oxygen permeable,” providing “anti-oxidant and anti-aging properties” in a super glossy, sheerly-tinted pastel polish.  Nice.  Colors include Bamboo and Breathe, pastel Orange and Pink, respectively.

These are subtle, offering a refined, pull-together look while also caring for your nails – as the warmer Spring and Summer months are upon us and we find our fingers and toes full-on exposed, this is a nice way to stay natural, but also groomed.

Paint It Black

I happened across this Black-Friday-Inspired post and had to share.  I used to get asked – during my more outwardly Goth days – “do you own black lipstick!?”…in a tone as if to insult or hit a nerve.  “Well, no…but I do have black lipgloss to match my nail polish…”

I never did understand why that was intended to get me riled up – while I wasn’t darkening my lips to match the Nighttime sky, I didn’t think it was at all unattractive…so the question scarcely skimmed my surface.  Wearable?  Not unless you don’t mind the attention.  But chic?  Why not?!

For shoots in particular, it works beautifully.  I can’t say I’ve seen it in the street much, though if I did I’d think “way to go, sass!” in appreciation of that individual’s hutzpah!

Anyway, I loved the images in this post, and thought some of the blacks were quite divine.  Black is incredibly gorgeous to me in general, as colors…or absence of color goes.

My personal favorites posted? The Illamasqua Pristine is gorgeous with its warmer, blackened-berry tinge…  And MAC’s Black Knight, for it’s brooding, warm-velvet opacity.

Traffic-halting and deviantly dynamite, all around.

Illamasqua Sculpting Palette

I’ll be honest, I’m kind of overwhelmed by the plethora of contouring palettes these days!  I mean it’s GREAT, don’t get me wrong – being “in season” means there are countless options to choose from!  But therein lies the debacle – overload!

I actually really like the look of Illamasqua’s Palettebut it may not be as suited to the masses as many of the “trios” that are out.  The shades are a hair less intuitive – ones you would find in a pro contour kit for makeup artists or performers (Ballroom, stage, actor etc…) who need true definition at a distance.

In that way, I’m not sure this is ideal for a beginner – contouring in and of itself isn’t outrageously complex, but hues like these might well require a more solid grasp of shading…as well as what works best with your tonality.

The shades are as follows:

  • Rush – champagne shimmer
  • Cirrus – ivory brightening matte
  • Heroine – cool-toned matte contour shade for fair-medium skin
  • Nimbus – matte grey under shadow
  • Steal – softly warm coffee bronzer
  • Create – peach-toned matte contour shade for darker skin tones

I have seen some nice reviews, but I think it’s fair to say one needs a lighter hand and proper brushes here so that the end results are natural…not painterly!
