Multi-Tasking Hydrating Mists

I’ve stocked up on a ton of facial mists myself over the years, usually finding them at Asian markets, Asian brands on eBay, or in New-York-City style pharmacies (think Evian, Avene, La Roche Posay…now FAR more accessible!)

Many mists these days, though, aren’t just for cooling, refreshing, or soothing.  Nowadays they are designed as much to protect you from the elements as they are for instant, feeling great at the time.

Garnier’s Moisture Bomb Multi Protection Hydrating Mist (that’s a mouthful!) protects the skin from UV pollution and oxidation, boasts an SPF of 30, and hydrates with a “lighter than air” feel – a nice addition to refreshing, don’t you think?  It isn’t here in the USA as far as I can tell…but you can find it in the UK at Boots, for one.  For a review, you can check out ReallyRee’s here.

For another multi-tasking variation on mists,Wander’s Glow Getter Mist promises non-comedogenic moisturizing, antibacterial soothing and healing, plus a radiant , dullness-busting, dewiness.  Yep, this rose-scented spray actually serves as a bit of a highlighter, how about that?  So not only do you feel refreshed, but you most certainly look it (provided you are wanting that all-over-glow it provides – with or without makeup underneath. Oilier skin types may not, but I haven’t seen too many reviews just yet to determine that!)

Last but definitely not least (since the brand has quite a cult following already for its masks!) is GlamGlow’s Glowsetter setting spray.  Per Sephora’s description: “This instant makeup finisher is infused with TEAOXI® complex (green tea, white tea, and red tea) paired with charged waters and caffeine to hydrate, energize, and smooth in a weightless fine mist. Inspired by Hollywood skin—always sexy, never shiny—this setting spray is the perfect makeup companion, finishing your look with a soft, cloud-like mist so your glow goes everywhere with you, no matter what.” Fan of the brand?  Eager to try it?

Garnier Sheet Masks

I’ve seen zero word of these until this am – I was resistant to sheet masks forever, thinking they fall right off my face while I did other things around the house, took a bath, whatever.  They DON’T, and they’re FABULOUS.  And, you have to wear a lot less on your skin, or zero makeup at all, when your “canvas” is in great shape.

I haven’t – obviously – tried these, but I do have the Garnier Aqua Bomb moisturizer, which I love.  I like Garnier as a brand as well, and hope that we see these in the USA…soon.  The moisture sheet masks are typically the ones I go for – they not only hydrate, but soothe and plump the skin.  At almost 39…I like it! 😉

Summer 2016 – L’Oreal Masks

I’m a little bit nutty about taking care of my skin – it’s one of those things that you have to be incredibly proactive about (as in, start early in life!)  It will make a difference if you start to baby your skin early on in life – not only because it becomes an engrained habit, but because you have protected it so well from nature’s aggressors over time.

I’ve always like L’Oreal as a brand – not so much because it is an absolute monster of a company, but because that as a giant in the industry, it has the resources to do solid research and testing – great R&D results in products that actually DO what they say they will…and all the L’Oreal products I have tried, have delivered.

Their L’Oreal drugstore line is on the moderate to higher end where pricing is concerned, but it also won’t break the bank (La Mer, anyone) so it makes loving your skin less damaging to your wallet.

The newest items, coming this Summer, include a variety of masks – always a fun way to de-stress, and pamper your epidermis.  There will be three formulations available:

  • Exfoliate & Refine Pores  3 Pure Clays + Red Algae
  • Purify & Mattify –  3 Pure Clays + Eucalyptus
  • Detox & Brighten –  3 Pure Clays + Charcoal

Per BudgetBeautyBlog, one of the few places posting the news, these creamy , 10 minute masks combine:
  1. Kaolinite (to cleanse & exfoliate)
  2. Montmorillonite (absorb oil)
  3. Rhassoul (rich in minerals to condition & hydrate)
I’m kind of excited to see these.  I don’t really need another mask, but I always get excited about new products. 🙂  Are you looking forward to checking these out?

Summer 2016 – Estee Lauder Genuine Glow

More glow-getters on the horizon, this time from cosmetic giant, Estee Lauder.  Genuine Glow Summer 2016 Collection includes five super-star, radiance-delivering products:

What I love about these products is that they are ageless – they can work beautifully for someone in their 20’s as much as someone in her 50’s – they are designed to give a natural illumination to the complexion with subtle, flushed color.

There’s no over-doing here, no mask-like finish, or real ability to be too heavy-handed in the first place.  Hallelujah!

In my own mind the goal of any color cosmetic (shy of ballroom / skating / theater performance (etc) OR your wedding (mine’s soon! ❤ ) / night out (etc)) is to enhance.  Not hide.

Yes, you ARE gorgeous enough to go without makeup!  But for days when you might need an extra boost – just enough to give your bright eyes the spotlight (as opposed to sleepless undeyes or lackluster skin!) – these hydrating, priming, and brightening products can help.

Chicprofile shares more details here (haven’t seen all online as yet, but those with links are above. 🙂 )

Cover FX Custom Blot Drops

Sign. Me. Up!

I can’t STAND shine.  Summer is that time of year when grateful-for-a-glow turns to slick-skin misery!  Sometimes it is only perspiration.  But mostly I feel like I have a harder time staying generally mattified in the hot, summer sun and increasingly humid conditions…even when I’m not breaking a sweat, so to speak. Ugh.  No thanks!

Sephora.com photo

Sephora.com photo

So…I LOVE the idea of a drop formulation designed to help tackle the slippery slope that is summer skin!  Enter Cover FX with a new breed of Custom Drops (they have been rather successful with their liquid pigment Cover Drops, and other items of the ilk, such as skin-loving Infusions, over time so why not expand further?!)

Custom Blot Drops  give you an instantly matte complexion by balancing skin (especially the troublesome kind!) with oil-control ingredients AND acne-attacking salicylic acid.  Cucumber, papaya and chamomile tea up to hydrate and soothe skin, while the former few keep you clear and shine-free.

The product can be used on its own or paired with any of your liquid makeup or skin care.  It is This product is “free of mineral oil, gluten, talc, formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, DBP (dibutyl phthlate), and camphor,” just in case you’re wondering! 😉

I kind of feel like it is about time for this kind of item – mattifying moisturizers and shine solutions just haven’t made enough of an impact in the past (for me, at least.)  The one thing that has is a good ol’ blotting sheet…but I’d love to eliminate those while I’m at it.

Ideal Soleil In Shower After Sun by Vichy

Taking a cue from the many in-shower moisturizers and self tanners, Vichy is introducing a new after-sun product designed for use as you rinse off after spending time outside on a sunny day.

Ideal Soleil is made from men and women, and created to soothe, soften, and hydrate skin for up to 48 hours with a combination of shea oil and a several of vegetable oils (apricot kernel, coriander seed , blackcurrant seed and echium), all all rich in fatty acids.

The product is easy to apply, and absorbs quickly into the skin.  You can (for dry skin) apply it and leave it on.  Or…(for wet skin), hop in the shower and wash with your usual soap or gel, apply the after-sun, and then rinse.

Ideal Soleil is free from parabens, hypoallergenic, and tested on sensitive skin – all wonderful attributes! 🙂  I love that suncare is being amped up all the time – it is HUGELY important, and something we all could be more mindful of (our epidermis will thank us!)

My Current Go-To Meal

Despite my immense propensity for “getting bored,” I never seem to tire of healthy foods.  I’m enormously thankful for that, as I am scarcely exempt from getting cravings.  Fortunately a giant bowl protein and vegetables is generally enough to derail those venomous “you know you want a cookie”s, but it doesn’t mean it is always easy!  My willpower is tightly tied to my goals – I do my best to adhere to those, and focus on the end result as much as I can, which helps me see past the immediate satisfaction I *think* I’ll feel.

Eating protein DOES help – you are providing your body with a slower-digesting source of fuel that registers as “satiety” for a longer period…and I definitely need that!  If not, I’d be in trouble – after my late 20s, food started to “stick,” whether I protested or not.  Staying well hydrated helps to stave off cravings as well, which helps me stick to my goals as best I can.

Lately my protein choices have changed (just a hair!) – since I eat a lot of the same foods, it isn’t at all surprising!  That said, it also isn’t so dramatic a change, my body will have any issues processing.  I’ve swapped out chicken breasts and tenders for ground chicken.  At least for now. I can’t say why specifically, but it totally hits the spot! 😀 Regardless of the protein source (salmon, shrimp and mild fish are other favorites!), I will always add vegetables.

I add a few veggies into this recipe, but I add even more with it for a meal – I probably go through about 8  lbs of vegetables a day.  Yes…I said A DAY.  You know those enormous 4 lb frozen mixed vegetable packages at the supermarket?  I go through at least two a day (sometimes I use one, along with several smaller packages, varying the “mix.”)  Veggies add healthy, less calorically-dense VOLUME and, because I love to eat, volume is key.  My favorite picks are:

  • California Blend – broccoli, cauliflower, carrots. (I use these for the bulk)
  • Italian Blend – broccoli, cauliflower, Italian green beans, zucchini, carrots
  • Asian Blend – broccoli, snap peas, water chestnuts, red peppers, mushrooms
  • Ranchero Fiesta – broccoli, white beans, chickpeas, carrots, red peppers, dark red kidney beans, Italian green beans. (I generally use half a bag, mixed with less starchy vegetables, but I love these for the extra fiber and protein (which, again, helps you stay satisfied longer!))

Those aside, my favorite vegetables to prepare with the ground chicken are organic red, yellow, and orange peppers (sweeter than the green), sliced baby bella mushrooms, and fire roasted tomatoes.  Sometimes I also add baby spinach, but I’ll toss it in towards the end if I do so it doesn’t get cooked too much and lose nutrients.

IMG_2420

I slice the peppers into small strips, after removing the stem and seeds, and quartering.  The mushrooms just need to be rinsed, and that’s it!  I will heat the stove on high and toss all the veggies with some salt and pepper into my snazzy Curtis Stone pan (which I don’t have to use any oil with! 🙂 ) I generally put the cover on and let them simmer, stirring occasionally, for about six or seven minutes.

IMG_2609

Then I put two pounds of ground chicken (Whole Foods can grind breast meat for you if they are out!) into a second, larger pan, over high heat – again, no oil is necessary, but I do sprinkle Jane’s Mixed Up Salt on both sides (it’s easy to sprinkle on one side while in the package, then when you place it in the pan face down, you can add to the second side.)  I give it about two or three minutes on high to let one side brown gently, then I flip.  I’ll give it a minute or two and then start to chop it with my spatula, and flip as necessary.

I DON’T like dried-out meat, so I will get it cooked about 75% through, then add in the vegetable mixture, which is softened by now, but not overcooked.  I’ll let that simmer on a medium to high heat mixing periodically until it’s cooked through.

IMG_2602

And voila…easy as that.  The whole thing doesn’t take more than about 15 minutes or so, and it lasts me through a few meals.  I DO tend to eat “dinner” a few times at Night, though… 🙂  It really is like feeding a raptor.

For more of my Nutritional Choices… 😀

Clinique Pep-Start

So I’m not sure if I totally buy that you can look more wide awake in three seconds (I love that it says three, as opposed to five, or two, or fifteen, by the way.)  But…Clinique is a long-standing and well-backed brand, with many cult products among the ranks, so perhaps this Pep Start Eye Cream will hold up to it’s claims…

Screen Shot 2016-02-03 at 5.02.15 PM

This newbie aims to hydrate, refresh, brighten, and all around add some “pep” to your peepers.  The tip is a pop-up, cool-touch, de-puffing ball designed to be swiped in circular motions around the eyes.  Very wax-on / wax-off (if you get the Karate Kid reference. 😉 )

Interestingly, the five reviews on the site currently have averaged three of five stars – it sounds like consumers are not keen on the packaging (preferring a steel ball for real “cooling”), but others thought it worked well and quickly.

Peter Thomas Roth Dots

I couldn’t even begin to enumerate the full-on arsenal of products I have for breakouts!  As an athlete it can be extra work keeping pores clear (rolling on Martial Arts mats, sweating profusely, gym equipment…!)

While I haven’t tried this snazzy Acne-Clear Invisible Dot, I love the idea.  Lotions and potions can be incredibly drying, slippery, or flat-out “hi-I-have-a-pink-calamine-dot-on-my-face.”  Um…no good!

This lil’ sticker is easy to use, and loaded with some wonderful ingredients – not only are the components great solo, but here they are in combination in order to combat the multitude of troubles of the blemish itself….and the treatment of it (think: dry, red, irritated skin!)

Per Ulta:

Key Ingredients & Benefits:

  • 0.5% Salicylic Acid (OTC active level) – Active ingredient proven to treat active blemishes and prevent the formation of new breakouts.
  • Tea Tree Oil – An essential oil from an Australian plant has natural antimicrobial activity which can work on the skin-dwelling bacteria involved in the development of problem skin.
  • Hyaluronic Acid – A humectant, works to keep skin hydrated and can hold up to 1,000 times its weight in water by pulling moisture from the air.
  • Volcanic Ash – A natural absorbent.

It looks like there are four sheets of 12 dots in the package, which makes the $30 price rage much more justifiable.  That said, I’d like to make sure the expiration date was a while out so I wasn’t wasting any if usage is infrequent.
