Halloween Fun – Wish Formula Bat Eye Essence Mask

Well, this is a first… I mean, I’ve seen sheet masks with character faces, but one in the shape of a bat…not until now. The glam-goth girl in me thinks it’s absolutely precious (and I’m not sure I’d ever want to use any other eye mask again!)

If you’re feeling (or looking) a little fatigued, Wish Formula Bat Eye Essence Mask will swoop in to the rescue. Combining soothing licorice, brightening vitamin C, hydrating fermented honey…and a kiss of mistletoe…these sassy little wings will perk you right up, leaving you with a wakeful look, and plump-ified peepers.

If you love Halloween as much as I do, the marketers might well have you snookered.

Juice Beauty Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray

I do my best to age as gracefully as possible – we are, of course, at the mercy of our genes to some extent, but there’s a lot to be said for being proactive.

I was fortunate that my mother always has a skincare “routine” – she never went to bed with makeup on, she always washed her face, she generally had more than one or two creams, serums, or oils that she’d apply. . .  I not only watched her, and the various steps she took to care for her skin, but I often asked questions and snooped around her products.

I was interested in skincare at a really young age, so that helped too.  It wasn’t about making myself “beautiful” per se, or thinking I could one day cheat the clock.  It was more about doing for my skin what I did for my body.  I exercised, I ate healthy foods, I tried to get a good amount of sleep… So why would I try to take care of all my organs and muscles and skip the outer layers?

My mother always said that there’s no sense trying to “cover up” – “starting with the right canvas,” she (rightly) advised, was vital.  Exfoliation, for one, is a great way to prep and smooth that canvas – it has to be done thoughtfully, of course, and without too much aggression (no one needs red, burned, or damaged skin!)  When done properly, you can revive and maintain a lit-from-within glow, and anything you care to put on top of it will both absorb better, and appear more seamless.

I recently read about Juice Beauty’s Stem Cellular Exfoliating Peel Spray – traditionally peels are applied with pads, from droppers, by dermatologists etc… .  But this is a little bit innovative in the sense that you can mist it on at home and have immediate results.

Per Juicebeauty.com:

Benefits

  • Visibly resurfaces with gentle plant-derived skin exfoliant.
  • Replenishes, restores and renews with a proprietary blend of fruit stem cells which have been infused into an organic resveratrol-rich grapeseed base.
  • Improves skin luminosity with Vitamin C.
  • Visibly brightens with ascorbic acid and licorice root extract.
  • Soothes with cucumber extract & organic aloe.

If you are using retinoid acid of any kind, or other AHAs or BHAs, you might want to avoid combining (as the review above, it can be a little (or a lot!) irritating.)  The spray does feature soothing additives in the way of aloe and cucumber, but it’s still possible to overdo.

I love the ease of this application of this skin-smoothing peel, and have heard a lot of great things about Juice Beauty over the years.  Eager to try it? Sounds like a wonderful addition to a skincare routine. and one I might check out myself!

Clarisonic Smart Profile Uplift

So I’m sure there are a plethora of skeptics out there.  I was one myself. . .before my Clarisonic cleansing brush.  I still just use my hands to wash my face sometimes but I ALWAYS see a difference when I use my – rather expensive – brush device.  So yes…it’s worth it.

A new advancement has come to light, however, in the Clarisonic Smart Profile Uplift ($349). The 2-in-1 cleansing and micro-firming device not only cleanses the skin, but purportedly targets 15 signs of aging (per Clarisonic.com):

Smart Profile Uplift targets 15 signs of aging on face, neck, and décolleté.

  • Provides next-level micro-firming massage.
  • Delivers skin-changing sonic cleansing.
  • Minimizes the look of pores.
  • Boosts the absorption of your daily skincare products.
  • See visible, cumulative results.

I know sounds too good to be true, but home devices (the right ones) are an amazing way to keep up with results from dermatologic procedures, and to make the products you have at home work their best. Think of it as an investment.

It’s a new product so there aren’t many reviews (which I always invest in reading for pricier items), but I’d keep your eyes open because as with anything that promises these kinds of results…it’s SURE to catch on.  Especially from this brand, with known “cult” brushes (and cult for great reason – they WORK!)

Clinique Fresh Pressed Pure Vitamin C 7 Day System

Vitamin C has long been used for brightening the skin, evening tone, and tackling pesky fine lines.  It isn’t new, in this case, but it is pretty fabulous, and is a great alternative to sometimes harsher (though effective) topicals such as hydroquinone and retinoids.

One of the biggest issues with Vitamin C preparations, though, is that it can lose efficacy and potency rather rapidly.  Once we open a large-scale bottle, chances are we aren’t going to get through the product as quickly as it will begin to break down.

I love that Clinque has addressed this packaging concern with their new Fresh Pressed 7 Day System with Pure Vitamin C. I also, not so secretly, love powdered cleansers that activate with water!

Per Clinique, the two part system is designed to keep you radiant and retexturized:

This ultrafine powder cleanser releases the de-aging power of fresh vitamin C to refresh and renew. Instantly skin is awakened, purified, with a refined texture and brighter look. Use in AM to jump-start skin’s renewal.

This unique booster releases the de-aging power of 10% fresh vitamin C to refresh and renew. Use with your favourite Clinique moisturizer to instantly brighten skin’s look—and deliver remarkably even-toned, retexturized skin starting in just one week.

ReallyRee offers a review here, and Musingsofamuse shares a little info here.

Personally, I love the sound of it.  Taking care of your skin early will make a difference, so if you are younger, you can benefit as much from it!

Garnier Sheet Masks

I’ve seen zero word of these until this am – I was resistant to sheet masks forever, thinking they fall right off my face while I did other things around the house, took a bath, whatever.  They DON’T, and they’re FABULOUS.  And, you have to wear a lot less on your skin, or zero makeup at all, when your “canvas” is in great shape.

I haven’t – obviously – tried these, but I do have the Garnier Aqua Bomb moisturizer, which I love.  I like Garnier as a brand as well, and hope that we see these in the USA…soon.  The moisture sheet masks are typically the ones I go for – they not only hydrate, but soothe and plump the skin.  At almost 39…I like it! 😉

Urban Decay Prime Time For Holiday

Newness from Urban Decay *possibly* in time for the Holiday (supposedly available from Belk.com, but I don’t see any of these listed as yet.)  Otherwise, they are launching on urbandecay.com January 1st.

It isn’t just one product, though, or one kind of product.  UD is releasing five new primers. Yes, five. (Once again, my inner ballroom-dance-competitor-self is wondering why they’ve arrived so long after I stopped competing!)

The five, which will retail for $34 each, include:

1. Optical Illusion – Designed to blur flaws, reduce fine lines, minimize pores, smooth skin
2. Bright & Tight – Aims to provide brighter, firmer skin
3. De-Slick – As with their other De-Slicks, designed to absorb and minimize shine, and to make your makeup last loner
4. Self-Adjusting– A color-correcting formulation with encapsulated pigments that adjust to your personal skin tone
5. Urban Defense – A translucent, SPF 30 sunscreen base

They do already have quite a lineup of setting sprays, as well as eyeshadow primer – all which seem to manage rave reviews – but I think these will do rather well as a natural expansion for them.  Thoughts?

Etude House Sun Blind UV Cushion

So Cushions have become a major thing in the US – maybe not quite as massive as the impact from their originating countries, but they’ve definitely taken off in the last couple of years.  The formulations cover the gamut of beauty and color cosmetics, to skincare, so you can bet at least a few of your favorite products can be found in this format.

Take UV protection for example… How adorable is this Etude House Sun Blind Cushion? It’s nod-to-nautical stripes and bright white base make the compact itself something you wouldn’t mind pulling out.  What I love is that this precious little package packs an SPF 50+ / PA +++ punch.

In case you aren’t sure of the designations (let me say first, I am not a dermatologist, but this may help at least explain the terminology!):

  • SPF refers to the protection from the sun’s UVB rays
  • The PA rating refers to the UVA protection level
  • UVA = Long wave Ultraviolet A rays. These can penetrate deeply into the dermis (our skin’s thickest layer.) UVA therefore can lead to photo aging – premature wrinkling and aging of your skin – as well as immune system suppression.  No thanks!
  • UVB = Short Wave Ultraviolet B rays. These can burn the surface of the skin (superficial), potentially contributing to conditions like skin cancer

The PA is not regulated by the FDA, and is a Japanese and Korean designation.  These days the best way to be sure you have both covered is a “broad spectrum” or “full spectrum” on the label.  Still, it does indicate that the product offers at least some UVA protection – PA +++ is the highest grade of UVA protection available, with a Persistent Pigment Darkening (PPD) rating of more than 8.)

In any case, the Etude House packaging makes taking care of your skin – in Summer or any other season – a cinch.  It’s incredibly easy to tote around, making for quick and easy reapplication.  With skincare, ease of use always helps makes applying the proper amount more a habit, and less of a chore. NICE.

The Magnetic Mask

I don’t know if I can keep up with the facial and skin masks out there – it’s kind f overwhelming!  That said, I tend – no matter the hype and hullabaloo – to dismiss sheet masks because I just don’t have the wherewithal to lie down for 20 minutes with a sheet on my face!  Not my thing.  Cream masks, however, I can handle.

This newbie – Dr. Brandt Skincare’s MAGNETIGHT Age-Defier –  is designed to age-defy with the power of “attraction.”  Yep, that’s what it says.  The formula is made with iron, whose magnetic properties help to (so they say) “reduce signs of aging skin and reduce the appearance of stressed skin.”  Hmm.

Sephora.com

Sephora.com

The mask has all skin types in mind, but especially those looking to target fine lines, wrinkles, loss of firmness and elasticity, and dulness and uneven texture.  I feel like I could use help – current AND proactive – in those departments, but I’m not sure the description satisfies my need to hear more about how it actually works.  Curious to hear reviews…

Interested in masks?  Or this one?!

NIOD Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide

Superoxiwhat?!  I know…that’s a mouthful… But NIOD has some really awesome products and this one is worth a mention.

I love mists and facial sprays – not only in summer when the heat index is driving upwards, but also after workouts, after washing my face, even just after a bath.  Mists can offer a little extra hydration, element protection, oil control, calming effects, you name it.  The NIOD Superoxide Dismutase Saccharide Mist is, however, a super-charged skin-saver…

nod.com

nod.com

This unique “dermal treatment” is designed to protect your precious peau (skin!) from “many forms of oxidative stress, dermal water loss and inflammation, all of which contribute to loss of visible skin quality over time.”  In other words, this is meant to be used OFTEN as a preventative protection, maintaining the beauty of your skin now, and staving off nasty age-causing aggressors.

Deciem, the parent Company, always goes well above and beyond with explanations – sometimes it is a bit much to read but I would rather err on the side of knowing more, than less.  The key technologies used include the below (and please do reference the link above for a full description of each):

  • Yeast-Derived Superoxide Dismutase (SOD)
  • Purified North American Four O’ Clock Flower
  • Marine Exopolysaccharides

The potent stuff is at the top of the ingredient list, which is always a wonderful thing…though again, I’m not surprised – this Company’s products are no-nonsense and definitely deliver. (PS: My OWN reviews – I have used some of their products and really felt they did what they intended – no one asked me to say that, nor would I boost a brand I didn’t really like!)

The bottle is apparently quite large, so you do get a lot for the money. Personally, I LOVE the ease of use of mists, and anything that might help ward off unseasonably early wrinkles and skin damage is GREAT by me!  Healthy, happy skin! 🙂

Smashbox Studio Skin 24-Hour Concealer

Athletes know the struggle is real… I don’t wear much on my skin beyond actual skincare products (which I layer on) – it won’t work for my lifestyle and I honestly don’t want to look like two different people between daytime, and when I get ready for bed.  Natural is key for me, but so is staying power when I do need something.

Smashbox already has a 24-hour waterproof concealer – the 24 Hour Spot Concealer – so I’m not totally sure if this is replacing it or what (both are the same price, $25.)  Studio Skin 24 Hour Concealer (you can also get it here) is the newest to the lineup and referred to as a “magic wand” by artists at the Smashbox L.A. studio.  What a lot of people didn’t like about the Spot Concealer was the applicator – it often leaked when closing (though there are specific instructions about how to wipe the wand down) – so maybe this is a step up.  Still, while the benefits seem close, housing aside, it doesn’t appear to be a replacement.

The product is designed to stay put, hide imperfections, and maintain a moisturizing effect that won’t settle into lines.  It’s medium to full coverage, sweat, humidity, AND transfer resistant (hallelujah), oil free, and light diffusing – that’s quite a list of “bragging rights,” and one that anyone who is active – or dealing with summer – will appreciate.  Thoughts on this guy?
